Searching The Internet With Search Engines
The virtual world of Internet and web has fulfilled the dream of many of converting the world to a global village. The idea of the global village was to have a peaceful world, with no borders and no limitations. This idea was fulfilled with telecommunication and the Internet. Messages take seconds to reach to other parts of the world. Information about a topic appears with the blink of an eye and is free for use through internet. The internet information base is so wide and spread world wide that there is hardly a topic in the world on which you cannot find information.
Messages reach people in a blink of an eye. News, media, social networking sites have already allowed the freedom of expression. Internet knowledge base is so advanced that people can find information related to any topic and with hardly any cost.
One such advancement is the introduction of search engines. They simply work as catalogs for searching information on the web with extremely fast retrieval services despite the vastness of its resources. However, finding the right information and searching the web via search engines is quite a mammoth task.
One must have know-how to a certain extent of how search engines retrieve information and what tricks can be used for fast and correct retrieval of information. Information is plenty but sifting the right information is the tricky part.
Searching the web via search engines is a norm is today’s world. However, it is not easy retrieving relevant information from the web without keeping in mind a few tips and tricks.
Before I go into describing a few tricks on using search engines to collect information, I would like to say a few things about the working of search engines. No one knows which algorithm search engines use to bring back results since most search engines are secretive about the techniques they use to search the web.
However, we do know a few patterns the search engines use such as they pick websites or articles base on keyword the user has entered and if it exists in the website with certain density, the search engines bring back the results for the users. Similarly, the search engines are less impressed by graphics and focus more on the relevant information on the site.
Search engines use keywords written by user in their search and compare exact matches and the density at which they appear on a web page. The density measure varies from search engine to search engine. However, while searching make sure you use ‘plus’ operator instead of ‘and’ and try not to use prepositions, articles or helping verbs and search engines ignore that.
Always try to search on more than one search engine for the same keyword as we cannot really trust the authenticity of the information on web unless the source is very credible. Use simplified terms i. E. Do not write long sentences in the search as the search engine treats every word written by the user as a separate keyword. That means it might bring back results for each word separately.
Also, for prepositions, articles and helping verbs using the ‘plus’ operator instead of the preposition, article or helping verb. These are a few techniques that can help you in getting the right results while searching the web via search engines. However, it would take you some practice to pull out the right results for yourself.
Remember, not everything on internet is authentic. Before using any information gathered through searching the web via search engines, check the authenticity of sources. Not to mention check the credentials of the author quoting. It is just like going to a library and looking for correct and authentic resources. Happy surfing!
