In the recent economy there are many folks who have suffered credit difficulties. Everyone wants to have perfect credit but from time to time we all have unforeseen situations. Credit troubles are bothersome for individuals because it can be complicated if not impossible to get credit, if you do manage to acquire credit you can be charged a higher interest rate or you may have to put down more collateral than usual.

On the other hand, there are some actions you can take to repair your credit. The very first thing to do is to get a current credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies. In the United States they are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Each year you are entitled to one credit report for no cost or you can also get a combined report that contains all three in one for a fee.

After you get your credit report you will need to study it for mistakes and inaccuracies. There are probably some mistakes on your report because it is predicted that as many as 79% of all credit reports include errors. You have the right to dispute anything that you think might be erroneous on your credit report.

Credit reporting companies make their money by gathering information and selling it, whether the information is truthful or not is not their concern since they get paid for the information in any case. You are the only one who suffers if the information is wrong. You must do whatever you can to make sure that it is correct.

Back in the 1970’s the Fair Credit Reporting Act was enacted to protect consumers. This law gives you the right to dispute anything that you consider to be incorrect or inaccurate on your report. You must submit a formal written dispute to the credit companies and after they receive the dispute they have between 30 and 45 days to either confirm the accuracy of their listings or erase it from your report.

Since the credit bureaus do not make money by dealing with disputes a customer actually has an advantage when it comes to disputing credit listings. If you put forth a good case you have a great chance of getting the information deleted.

As you are trying to repair your credit with disputes you should also attempt to rebuild some new good credit. Pay everything on time and if you can try to pay down the balances on your current debt. A significant portion of your credit score is based upon how much credit you have available compared to how much credit you have utilized. The highest scores belong to those who have access to credit but don’t actually use it.

Rebuilding and repairing your credit is something that can be accomplished you just need to take a few actions to get started.
